Aristotle University bracing for large, unauthorized event
Officials at Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University are bracing for a large unauthorized gathering at the campus that is scheduled to start Thursday.
“About a week ago we learned from the internet that unknown groups of individuals were organizing an event [on the migration crisis] on campus. We don’t know who they are or how many of them there are; no one has contacted us or asked for our permission,” Aristotle University rector Pericles Mitkas said.
The university’s concerns were shared in a letter to the prime minister’s office and the ministries of Citizens’ Protection and Education. The Greek Police confirmed the presence of a group of around 1,000 people gathered at the Italian port of Ancona, believed to be part of a movement that started in Frankfurt and is headed to Thessaloniki for the so-called No Border Camp.
“There is a question of security,” Mitkas said. “The university… cannot prevent break-ins or violations with just a handful of guards.”
