Firefighter dies fighting blaze north of Athens

A 48-year-old firefighter has lost his life while helping to put out a blaze north of Athens.

The fireman reportedly collapsed while combatting a wildfire in the area of Viotia on Sunday. A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Tuesday to determine the exact cause of the man’s death.

Interior Minister Panayiotis Kouroublis and Citizens’ Protection Minister Nikos Toskas issued statements expressing their condolences for the loss of the firefighter.

Gale force winds fanned wildfires in a number of places around Greece on Sunday.
