Aegina speedboat skipper remanded in custody
The 77-year-old skipper of a speedboat that collided with a tourist vessel off the Saronic island of Aegina killing four people on August 16 was remanded in custody following a Piraeus court decision on Thursday.
According to court papers, the judges ruled that the captain, Thrasyvoulos Lykourezos, failed to alert authorities on time although he was aware that human lives were in danger.
The court also ruled that the skipper’s transfer to shore following the accident was aimed at facilitating an eventual escape. The 77-year-old turned himself in and was arrested by coast guard officers two and a half hours after the crash.
