Anarchists detained after barging into Attica Bank

Police detained 22 suspected members of the anarchist group Rouvikonas (Rubicon) on Thursday after they barged into the branch of Attica Bank on Omirou Street, central Athens, before heading up to the second floor and hung a banner protesting the use of the state-backed lender by successive governments.

In a statement posted online earlier in the day, Rouvikonas decried “the ‘non-systemic’ bank, another tool that allows the bourgeoisie and the political system to freely continue their work even as society finds itself in a state of financial asphyxiation.”

It described Attica Bank as “a tool that was created and used by previous governments and taken over by SYRIZA which quickly realized its usefulness in the creation of its own financial and political status quo.”

Rouvikonas has been linked to numerous acts of vandalism on public property and state offices, including smashing Athens metro ticket machines and a paint attack on the Turkish Embassy.
