Crew of ‘Aydin Captan’ face court in Crete The captain and engineer of the alleged people-smuggling ship «Aydin Captan,» which sank off the southeast coast of Crete on Friday after stormy weather hindered efforts to rescue the foundering vessel, are to face court today after a prosecutor in the Cretan prefecture of Lasithi launched criminal proceedings against them, the Athens News Agency said on Saturday. Mejdet Sezer and Yasar San have held in the town of Neapoli in Lasithi since their arrest on Thursday, when 246 illegal immigrants aboard the «Aydin Captan» were rescued. The vessel was adrift in the Libyan Sea after its engines broke down amid gale force winds on New Year’s Day. Road deaths Eight die in collision in northeastern Greece Eight people died in a road accident on Friday night when two passenger cars collided on a country road close to the village of Fylakas near Komotini in northern Greece, the Athens News Agency reported on Saturday.Hussein Kadir, 24, had been driving one car carrying four people while 22-year-old Ozdan Oglu Uruz was driving a second car with two passengers.The identity of the other six people has not yet been confirmed. It is not known whether the accident was caused by the severe weather conditions. ‘Brother-smuggler’ Turks arrested in Patras Patras port authorities on Friday arrested a Turkish national for allegedly attempting to smuggle his brother to Italy in a car on board a ferry. Ihsani Gozubuyuk, 21, allegedly boarded the Superfast ferry with 31-year-old Husseyin Gozubuyuk hidden in the boot of his car. Both men face prosecution in Patras. Pensioner burned Fire services on the northern Aegean island of Lesvos discovered the charred body of an elderly man in his home in a neighborhood of Mytilene town early Saturday morning. Theodoros Souliotis, 75, apparently burned to death after an attempt to change a gas heater bottle in his home triggered a blaze he could not control, the fire department said. Shooting attack An Albanian national was shot in the face on Saturday night following a scuffle with a gun-wielding intruder who broke into the former’s home in Nea Roda, Halkidiki, and started firing random shots with a handgun. Andreas Poupas, 40, who was at home with his family, received slight facial injuries. Constantinos Kirbas has been arrested and faces prosecution.
