City of Athens runs permanent scheme
After running its own volunteer program during the Olympics, the Athens City Council is hoping to involve some 4,000 volunteers in a similar scheme it launched back in May. «We decided to set up a permanent volunteer scheme,» Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyannis told Kathimerini English Edition. «We aim to nurture the growing spirit of volunteerism in Greece. Volunteers assist with sports, cultural, youth-oriented, social welfare and community programs and events,» she added.
