Legal threats fly over Attica sludge woes

As hundreds of thousands of tons of sewage mount up on Psyttaleia, the Athens Water Company (EYDAP) is threatening to sue the Prefecture of Piraeus over what it describes as unfair checks being imposed on the islet near Piraeus. EYDAP claims that inspections and penalties imposed by prefecture officials concerning the state of the islet are only intended to help win votes ahead of the municipal elections this October. The prefecture has responded by issuing its own notice of intention to sue EYDAP and has demanded that the company withdraw the claim it sees as being slanderous. «The situation that has been created is unacceptable. The procedure to remove the sludge needs to be accelerated, otherwise Psyttaleia will be saturated, risking an ecological catastrophe,» said Piraeus Prefect Yiannis Michas.
