Seismic alert brings Balkan states together

Ten national seismology institutions belonging to countries in the Balkans will work together in a bid to be better prepared for future earthquakes in one of the world’s most seismic active regions, experts said yesterday. The cooperation between the institutions will involve exchanging information on earthquakes and forming a network to help warn of future dangers. «Greece and Turkey are two countries with high levels of seismic activity and cooperation between experts from those two countries will be valuable,» Dogan Kalafat, head of the Kandilli Observatory in Istanbul, told Kathimerini. Apart from Greece, the network will include Turkey, Bulgaria, Albania, Romania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
