Cyclist killed on highway

A 70-year-old cyclist with a British passport was killed on Saturday on the national road near Nea Kifissia in northern Athens when he was hit by a car that was racing with another vehicle. The two vehicles did not stop but witnesses recorded their details. The 70-year-old, who was not named, died on the way to the hospital. In a separate road accident, two people were killed when their car collided with a truck on the Maliakos Gulf stretch of the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway on Saturday. Another two people who were in the car, which had Serbian number plates, were also seriously injured and are in a critical condition in a hospital in Lamia. Two police officers who stopped at the crash scene narrowly avoided injury when a vehicle slammed into the back of their patrol car. The policemen managed to avoid injury by jumping out of the way.
