Prison guard shoots rival in dispute over Albanian woman A 40-year-old prison guard from Kaminia, near Piraeus, was in police custody yesterday after allegedly shooting a 44-year-old man following a dispute, leaving him with a thigh injury that proved to be fatal. The suspect, employed as a guard at Korydallos jail, is alleged to have visited the apartment of the 44-year-old with a pistol and to have shot him following an argument, believed to have been over a 24-year-old Albanian woman who was present at the time. The victim died from blood loss. Subsidized air routes Inspector finds no wrongdoing There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing in the way the government allocated subsidized air routes to some Greek islands, General Inspector of Public Administration Leandros Rakintzis said yesterday. Earlier this month, the president of Olympic Air, Andreas Vgenopoulos, accused Deputy Transport Minister Nikos Sifounakis of not studying the sector before holding a tender for 15 subsidized routes, which were awarded to Athens Airways and Sky Express. According to Rakintzis’s report there was no evidence of any offense having been committed. Kokkalis probed A Piraeus prosecutor yesterday launched an investigation into allegations that the chairman of Olympiakos soccer club, Sokratis Kokkalis, has incited his players to violence ahead of this Sunday’s Super League derby match against Panathinaikos. The Greens complained after press reports suggested that Kokkalis had told his players: «Kill them. I don’t care if Panathinaikos is left with five or two players on the field, I want you to win.» Bad loans Police in Thessaloniki said yesterday that they were seeking a 31-year-old woman believed to have unlawfully gained 68,500 euros in bank loans between 2005 and 2008 using documents belonging to her friends. The woman is alleged to have secured the loans using photocopies of her friends’ tax returns and police identity cards. Anarchists targeted A firebomb exploded outside a club frequented by anarchists, police said yesterday, noting that the explosion caused minor damage but no injuries. There had been no claim of responsibility by late yesterday. Child porn charges Two men in Halkidiki, northern Greece, were detained yesterday on charges of possessing pornographic photographs and videos of children. Police said they found hundreds of images of young girls on the computers of the suspects, aged 30 and 39. Hash haul An Albanian man was in police detention in Peristeri, western Athens, yesterday after a search of his home turned up 76 kilograms of cannabis. Officers were last night seeking a Greek man believed to be the suspect’s accomplice. Exploding chainsaw A man was killed yesterday in the village of Geliniatika in Corinthia, west of Athens, when the fuel-powered chainsaw he was using exploded. The unnamed man had been cutting some wooden beams in an abandoned home. It was unclear what caused the explosion.
