Fiddling as the country burns
Our foreign creditors and the markets have sent every conceivable message to Greece. Even its historic ally Valery Giscard d?Estaing spoke yesterday about the likelihood of the country exiting the euro.
After being asleep at the wheel for some months now, the Greek prime minister finally saw the iceberg coming. Yet even now he is hesitating to form an emergency government and to take the bold decisions that the circumstances dictate. To make matters worse, he is playing with fire by even entertaining the idea of a referendum.
As far as the opposition is concerned, it is also playing with fire by responding to our lenders and partners in slogans rather than with assurances.
Sirs, it is time to take the situation seriously and to behave like responsible politicians in a major national crisis. If today you fail to reach a deal and place the blame on your opponents, the burden of the country?s collapse will rest, of course, on the prime minister?s shoulders first and foremost, but also on all the other representatives of this bankrupt political system.
