The Greek National Opera: A shining example of excellence

Greece may be beset by misery brought on by the crisis, but that does not mean there are no shining examples of excellence here.

The Greek National Opera has achieved a lot in the past few years and has acquired an international reputation. Its management has succeeded in significantly reducing operating costs and attracting a larger public, including young people, to the opera.

It would be extremely shortsighted to undermine the good work the GNO is doing by slashing its funding further, especially given how many state organizations continue to operate without having any real purpose.

The GNO’s role is also important in another respect. Its new flagship is to be the crowning jewel of the Cultural Park at Faliro Bay that is currently under construction.

If we’re going to trim the fat, let’s do it with organizations that belong in the past, not those that belong in the future.
