Battling tax evasion

The battle against tax evasion should be a top priority.

The prosecutors who have undertaken this task have so far made significant progress compared to the not-so-distant past when the lack of know-how and counterproductive legislation put obstacles in their way.

There is little doubt that something has changed in this area and a number of issues have been solved thanks to political will.

However, we need to be cautious. The worst thing that could happen right now is for the impression to be created that all this effort has in fact been little more than a witch hunt aiming at weaking political foes.

The objective here must be to raise public sector revenue, to punish those who have committed financial crimes, and to protect the rule of law.

It would be a real shame, and at the same time result in great damage to the country, if rules and principles were to be sacrificed on the altar of a wild political game.
