The big gamble
It’s only natural that countries that have suffered terrorist attacks take all available measures to protect themselves. However, what is most pressing now is the need to extinguish the flame of extremism that is fueling young people to destroy both themselves and those around them instead of trying to build a new society. This is the only way to stop the vicious cycle of violence which grows stronger with every strike. However, as long as the bloodshed continues, the citizens of Western societies – who may be guilty of provoking the ire of many nations through their actions or omissions – will always be the victims… They will find themselves caught between two threats – the fear of a terrorist attack on the one hand and the loss of their individual rights on the other hand. And the measures we have accepted up to now will appear laughable compared to those that will follow if attacks on US and European targets continue. If the USA or Europe implement stricter measures, these will be against individuals outside their borders. However, as it is extremely difficult to protect «open» societies, the logical alternative is stop them from being so open. This will be the loss for all citizens of Western societies and a victory by all those who sacrifice themselves to destroy them…
