The environment vs financial interests
Kathimerini believes the environment to be a major political issue that should rank high on politicians’ and citizens’ agendas. Greeks understand that the environment is not just of interest to the few, as it affects the well-being and quality of life of everyone and of their children. We have repeatedly written about the polluting of the Asopos River, which poses a huge threat to public health as there are large food and drink companies in the area. New evidence presented today by Kathimerini shows that the situation is growing worse, while the government, entangled in its own red tape, is little more than a bystander. The Asopos issue is critical for Attica and we hope MPs of all parties take a stance on how it should be dealt with. Citizen voters demand that they ignore the political cost of clashing with financial interests which put their own gains before environmental protection.
