Ditch the double standards

Responding to criticism over the statute of limitations applicable to politicians, the Supreme Court president said what he was expected to say. Judges adjudicate on the basis of the law, the president said. And the bitter truth is that the laws which have been passed by Greece’s legislators actually absolve the country’s politicians of all responsibility for their actions. Legislation in force on the accountability of ministers guarantees the immunity of politicians and, indeed, prepares the ground for more wrongdoing and more scandals in the future. Every reasonable member of this society expects to see this particular piece of legislation change without any further ado. If the leaders of Greece’s political parties do not wish to be held responsible for covering up political scandals, they have an obligation to join hands in order to change the provisions currently in place. Before the law, the politicians and citizens of any country must be treated according to the same standards.
