MANOLIS TRIANTAFYLLIDIS: The distinguished linguist Manolis Triantafyllidis, who died the day before yesterday, made an important contribution to the demotic-purist language controversy, bringing something of the revolutionary spirit of the early decades of this century along with the culture of a European intellectual and the force of his own personality to the debate. His «Historical Grammar» is an achievement that honors modern Greek linguistics. Other books he wrote are historical monuments to the intellectual struggle of modern Hellenism, as well as that of the language debate. There have been objections to many of his views and some of these are well founded, but his general contribution to modern Hellenism remains unquestioned. MARGOT FONTEYN: Panama City, 21 – The British dancer Margot Fonteyn has been arrested and her husband, the former Panamanian ambassador to Britain, Dr Roberto Arias, who is accused of taking part in an armed conspiracy against the government, has arrived safely in a foreign country. The Panamanian authorities, however, are claiming that Arias came ashore near his farm from a fishing boat, accompanied by a group of his men, and has also been arrested.
