Panionios makes LEN Trophy semifinals

Panionios reached the semifinals of the LEN Trophy on February 2 by drawing at home against Slovenian side Koper, having beaten it away in the first leg.

The Nea Smyrni club drew 9-9 after a rather mediocre performance, but had the cushion of the four-goal win in Slovenia (12-8) to fall back on.

The draw for the semifinals will take place on February 8, with the Greeks hoping to avoid Italian giant Savona.

In the Euroleague, Olympiakos ended its disappointing campaign on a high, as it registered its only victory in the group stage on February 2.

The Reds defeated visiting Barcelona 11-7 to get their only three points in the group, but still finished last, one point behind third-placed Barcelona.

The Olympiakos players, who have not been paid for several months, decided after the game to launch strike action, starting with the league game against Vouliagmeni at home on February 5.

Greek international Antonis Vlontakis even stated after the match that «this may have been my last game for Olympiakos.”
