Panionios goes down in LEN Trophy final

The dream of winning its first European trophy came to a sad end for Panionios on April 27, as the Nea Smyrni club lost 11-3 at Savona in the return leg of the LEN Trophy final.

Having drawn in the first-leg match that took place in Greece (9-9) two weeks earlier, the two sides that went head to head in Italy were both after a victory, regardless of the score.

Panionios, however was no match for the Italians on the night, which was evident from the first period, when it was trailing by a 5-2 score.

The first half ended 8-3, meaning that the second was reduced to a mere formality, with Panionios unable to chalk up any more goals after losing its morale altogether.

It was the second defeat in a LEN Trophy final for Panionios in three years.
