Olympiakos returns to women’s throne

Olympiakos is the new women’s water polo champion, after seeing off holder Vouliagmeni 3-1 in the best-of five final series.

The Reds won Game 4 at home on May 10 with a score of 11-9 to win their fourth championship title.

Notably, at halftime the score was 10-2, but Vouliagmeni attempted a comeback that offered fans a dramatic finish to the match.

Vouliagmeni had finished top of the table after the regular season, but Olympiakos won Game 1 of the series last week to obtain the home advantage that saw it claim the title on May 10.

Alexia Kammenou, the coach who led Vouliagmeni to two consecutive Champions Cup trophies in Europe, tendered her resignation after the match, in protest at some referee decisions.
