Panathinaikos, PAOK join three others on top

Ten-man Panathinaikos outscored Xanthi in a five-goal thriller on October 16 to return to the top of the Super League, along with four other teams.

Just like AEK, Olympiakos, PAOK and Atromitos, the Greens have 10 points, after winning 3-2 at Xanthi despite having Victor Vitolo sent off in the 39th minute for a second bookable offense.

They are grateful to the league’s top scorer Sebastian Leto, who scored twice, and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, who made it 3-0, while Xanthi’s second-half goals by Edimar and Panayiotis Vlachodimos were not enough.

PAOK wasted a chance to go two points clear at the top by failing to beat visiting OFI at home in a game that ended in a scoreless draw late on Sunday.

Ergotelis appeared to be in no hurry to get a point from its game at home with Aris. The Thessaloniki side led in first-half injury time through Papa Khalifa Sankare for Aris’s first goal in the league this season, but Mario Budimir equalized in the last minute of time added on. The match ended 1-1.

Also on Sunday Panionios retained its unbeaten record away from home drawing 0-0 at PAS Giannina.

On Sunday AEK?s Iceland star, Eidur Gudjohnsen was operated after suffering a foot injury in the derby against Olympiakos on October 15. He is set to remain sidelined for up to six months.
