Doxa holds AEK to surprise draw

Doxa Dramas sprang a major upset on January 3 as it held AEK to a scoreless draw in Athens to take what was only its second point in the league so far. The first part of the 15th round of Super League action also saw Panionios beat Asteras Tripolis and PAS Giannina draw against OFI Crete.

AEK became the second team this season after Panionios to fail to beat lowly Doxa, and the Drama club even managed to hit the woodwork early in the second half at the Olympic Stadium. The ostensibly superior hosts however simply failed to dominate on the night.

AEK is now on 29 points from 15 games, level with second-placed Panathinaikos, which has played three games less.

At Nea Smyrni Panionios defeated Asteras 2-0 through goals by Dimitris Kolovos and Fanouris Goundoulakis to steer clear of the drop zone. Panionios missed a second-half penalty as Njazi Kuqi hit the ball over the bar.

PAS and OFI shared an entertaining 0-0 draw at Ioannina that only left the visitors happy, who are in seventh place on the table.

The round’s other five games will take place on January 4.
