Triple jump stars set for full flight again

Two of the country’s star track and field athletes, triple jumpers Voula Tsiamita and Olga Vasdeki, who have been sidelined by injuries the past couple of years, plan to make their return at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna next March. Tsiamita won a gold at the World Championships in Seville in 1999, but a nagging stress fracture forced her to miss last year’s Sydney Olympics and deprived her of the chance to defend her world title in Edmonton, Canada. Teammate Vasdeki, who joined Tsiamita on the pedestal in Seville with a bronze medal, also suffered a stress fracture. According to team officials, both athletes have virtually overcome their injuries. We’re very optimistic about the new season. We have two European championships ahead of us, and, I believe, many of our athletes will be stepping onto the pedestals, said the national team’s coach, Odysseas Papatolis. In the 19th minute, keeper Angelos Georgiou, in his Champions League debut, saved a blistering shot from Djalminha, and another from Emerson 10 minutes later.
