Atromitos stuns Panathinaikos to enter Cup semis

Atromitos has thrown Panathinaikos into another crisis after eliminating the Athens giant from the Greek Cup through a 1-0 victory in the second leg of their quarterfinal tie on Wednesday, while the other favorites, Olympiakos, AEK and PAOK are safely through to the last four of the competition.

After a goalless draw at Panathinaikos’s Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium two weeks earlier, Atromitos beat the Greens at Peristeri thanks to a solitary Milos Stojcev goal halfway through the second half.

In a clear lack of firepower after the injuries to Marcus Berg and Mladen Petric and the departure of top scorer Nikos Karelis to Genk last month, Panathinaikos failed to score again on Wednesday, after going goalless for four consecutive home games in league and cup.

PAOK scraped through to the semis via a scoreless draw with Panionios in Thessaloniki on Thursday after a 1-1 draw at Nea Smyrni in the first leg.

Olympiakos and AEK had a far easier passage to the last four of the Cup. The Reds followed up their 5-0 home win over Asteras Tripolis with a 1-1 at Tripoli last week, while AEK added a 1-0 away win over Iraklis to its 4-1 win at home in the first leg.
