Course records broken in Athens Half Marathon

Costas Gelaouzos and Rania Rebouli registered new course records at the Athens Half Marathon held at the center of the capital on Sunday morning with great success, helped by the favorable weather.

More than 17,000 runners participated in the fifth version of the event in Athens that is growing year after year, in tandem with the running movement in general in this country.

Besides the 21.1-kilometer race there were also 5k, 3k, and 1k runs, the latter concerning Special Olympics athletes only.

Gelaouzos, who belongs to Panathinaikos, clocked one hour, eight minutes and 35 seconds and earned himself a ticket to the European Championship in Amsterdam. Rebouli, representing Leros, finished in 1:16.57.

The Association of Greek Olympians and Greek Marathon record holder Maria Polyzou took part in the 5k race pushing a wheelchair with a 12-year-old girl, Marilena Geroyianni, in a bid to support this young sufferer of the Okamoto Syndrome.
