Aris signs new coach, dual national Herbert
Thessaloniki basketball club Aris – a qualifier for the upcoming season’s Euroleague after snatching third place in the Greek league through a best-of-five series win against Panionios – yesterday announced that it had signed Gordon Herbert as the club’s new coach. Reports said that Herbert, a dual citizen of Canada and Finland, had signed a one-year deal with an option for a second season. Herbert, 48, who previously held the coaching post with the Georgian national team, arrived in Thessaloniki for negotiations with Aris last Friday. A former player with several Finnish clubs throughout the 80s, Herbert had represented Canada at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 and the World Championships in Spain two years later.
