Fresh triumph in Europe for volleyball champion Iraklis

Iraklis has continued to stun volleyball fans with its impressive performances in the Champions League and is now on the verge of qualifying for the final-four of the competition. The reigning Greek club defeated former European champion Friedrichshafen 3-0 in Germany on Wednesday evening and needs just one set in the second leg of the quarterfinal tie to clinch its entry to the semifinals in Europe’s top club competition. Iraklis may be fourth in the Greek league and has suffered home losses to teams such as Aris and Finikas Syrou, but in Europe the Thessaloniki club has an unbeaten record of nine wins from nine games. On Wednesday, it won 25-21, 27-25, 25-18 against a side that proved ill-prepared for the match with Iraklis. Tonight the curtain raiser for the men’s 20th round of the league will be the match between Finikas Syrou and Milon on Syros at 7 p.m. The semifinal pairs for the women’s cup semifinals were drawn yesterday, pitting Panathinaikos against Olympiakos, while Markopoulo will clash with Iraklis. The final four will take place on Syros on March 27-28.
