Olympiakos draws first blood in the volleyball final

Olympiakos managed to wrest the home advantage from Panathinaikos in the men’s final series of the volleyball league with its impressive 3-0 win in Glyfada late on Monday. The Reds won 25-22, 25-20, 29-27 and will need two more victories to claim the title in the best-of-five series. They made the most of Panathinaikos’s defensive woes and excellent play by Ivan Miljkovic, who scored 17 points followed by Jose Rivera with 12. Liberman Agamez managed to score 24 points for Panathinaikos, but that was nowhere near enough for the hosts. Panathinaikos had some 2,000 fans on its side but they hindered rather than helped the team, throwing objects onto the court and twice interrupting the game, just when the hosts were picking up their pace and had taken the lead. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for tomorrow in Piraeus. In the playoffs for positions five to eight, Aris dismissed PAOK 3-0 on Monday (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) and won the series 2-1. It will now face Finikas Syrou for a spot in next season’s Challenge Cup. In the women’s finals, Panathinaikos won the first game with Olympiakos 3-0 at home last night (25-16, 25-19, 25-14).
