Lena and Jelena share the spoils

Australian tennis star Jelena Dokic swept Greek Lena Daniilidou in straight sets at the Vogue Athens Open final yesterday afternoon but the home favorite bounced back to win the doubles’ trophy along with Germany’s Jasmin Woehr in the evening. Dokic won the singles event of the $125,000 tournament by beating Daniilidou 6-2, 6-1 in a final that lasted no more than 67 minutes. The Aussie sensation dubbed the tournament «fantastic» and stated after her win: «I had to work on my tactics as Lena has the technique to cover the whole of the court.» Later in the doubles, Daniilidou ended up on the winning side as she and Woehr defeated Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky and Italy’s Tathiana Garbin in the final and won their first trophy as a pair this year. A visibly moved Daniilidou thanked the public for «being on my side throughout the week,» adding that «this gives me the strength and the courage to continue my career.» The Greek tennis player also collected a 15,000-euro bonus from the tournament organizers that had been promised to any Greek that managed to reach the singles’ final.
