In Brief

APOEL and Omonia fans clash in Nicosia One 20-year-old APOEL supporter was critically injured and three less seriously hurt after a brawl between rival fans in the Cyprus capital Nicosia. APOEL fans on their way to Larnaca on Sunday for a game against Salamina attacked Omonia fans who had gathered at a five-a-side field to play soccer. Reports suggest the clashes involving around 100 fans had been prearranged. Three suspects were arrested and warrants have been issued for three more. The Salamina vs APOEL match that followed was itself abandoned due to fresh crowd trouble among Salamina fans. Similar draws for Greeks in water polo Olympiakos and Panionios were drawn in similar groups for water polo’s Euroleague. The draw, held on Sunday in Zagreb, Croatia, has placed Greek champion Olympiakos in the same pool as Honved of Hungary, Budva of Montenegro and Partizan of Serbia, while Panionios will face Vasas of Hungary, Primorac Kotor of Montenegro and Jug of Croatia. In the last 16 of the LEN Trophy, Europe’s second-tier competition, Vouliagmeni will play Germany’s Spandau and NE Patra will meet Montenegro’s Cattaro. Swine flu The first match in Greece to be postponed due to swine flu was the second-division soccer clash between Aegaleo and Olympiakos Volou on Saturday. The local authority of Haidari, eastern Attica, refused to host the game at the municipal ground due to cases of the H1N1 virus reported at both clubs. The match has been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon and will be held at Ilioupoli. In a match played yesterday, Ethnikos defeated visiting Kalamata 1-0. PAOK-Conceicao Former Portuguese international Sergio Conceicao confirmed that he was ending his soccer career at a press conference in Thessaloniki yesterday. Capped 56 times, the 35-year-old midfielder will now become technical director at PAOK, the club where he decided to hang up his boots. This means that new president Zisis Vryzas will stay in this current post rather than return to the job of technical director.
