House receives request to lift immunity of Golden Dawn
Parliament on Friday received the 190-page document compiled by investigating magistrates Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou, explaining why the judges are asking for the House to lift the immunity of the nine remaining Golden Dawn MPs who have not been charged yet with being members of a criminal organization.
The judges cite witness testimonies, statements by the party’s lawmakers and evidence collected during the probe, which began after the murder of rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a Golden Dawn member in September.
The magistrates allege that the MPs gave and followed orders that led to violent and criminal activity. It is not clear yet when Parliament will decide whether to agree to the magistrates’ request.
Justice Minister Charalambos Athanasiou on Friday dismissed claims by Golden Dawn that the investigation is politically motivated. He said the justice system is “totally independent.”
