Hopes that the Athens metro will get a fourth line have been revived after Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis revealed that the government intends to fund the project, which is expected to cost close to 2 billion euros, through European Union structural funds and funding from the European Investment Bank.
The government is expected to provide more information about the project in around a month. Line 4, which is U-shaped, is expected to stretch from the Veikou Woods near Galatsi to Maroussi.
The section between Evangelismos in downtown Athens and Alsos Veikou (Veikou Woods), northeast of the city center, which will stretch over 8.3 kilometers and comprise nine stations, will be the first section to be built.
Attiko Metro sources told Kathimerini that the necessary studies have been carried out.
