Full statement by former Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis
There comes a time, when a lot can be at stake, within just a few days. Whenever we faced such historical challenges with unity and composure, we succeeded as a Nation. On the contrary, whenever recklessness and division prevailed, we suffered great calamities. Our recent history of the 20th century contains sufficient examples of both versions.
Today, we are faced with one such historical challenge. And its outcome will depend on our choice.
Doubtless, the European Union has many weaknesses in its function. And, apparently, our EU partners have made serious mistakes in addressing the crisis. Certainly, we too have made mistakes. And the painful repercussions of these mistakes have burdened many of our fellow citizens. Nevertheless, this reality does not alter the vital need for Greece’s participation to the European Union; even more, to the hard core of Europe.
Staying within the European family is imperative not only on economic and social grounds, since a possible exit would entail an inconceivably greater cost and sacrifices, mainly for the weak. It is, foremost, imperative on national grounds.
Whoever has been born and raised in this complex and unstable neighbourhood of the world – as we all Greeks have – knows from their childhood that national security must be the ultimate criterion for our decisions.
I share these thoughts with you not because I have any personal pursuit. The last thing I wish is to get involved in party competitions and conflicts. I feel, however, the obligation to tell you, as I have always been telling you, the truth.
By pushing Greece out of the European context, we expose the country to dangers. This should not happen in any way. Those who, in good intentions, think that, by voting “no” on Sunday, they strengthen the negotiating position of the country are making a mistake. They are making a serious mistake. Because “no” will be interpreted by all, in the whole world, as a choice for withdrawal from the heart of Europe. It will be the first step towards exit.
I deeply believe that Europe is our home. I believe that Greece is an indispensable part of the United Europe. This is what we all have to confirm decisively.
On Sunday, we say Yes to Europe. With prudence, unity, national morale, respect to the sacrifices of the Greek people.
