Last winter was warmest in Athens in 80 years, driest in 16

Last winter was the warmest in Athens in 80 years and also the driest in more than a decade, according to the National Observatory.

The average temperature from December 2015 to February 2016 was 12.1 degrees Celsius (53.8 Fahrenheit) while the average top temperature during that three-month period was 16.3 C (61.3 F).

The last time Athens had such a mild winter was in 1936 with an average temperature of 12.4 C (54.3 F) and an average top temperature of 16.5 C (61.7 F).

Last winter was also very dry with just 38 centimeters of rain falling in Athens from December 2015 through February 2016.

The last time that three-month period was so dry was in 1990 when Athens got 37.6 cm of rain.
