Greek prosecutor on Vgenopoulos case sues Cyprus authorities

Appeals court prosecutor Georgia Tsatani, who was responsible for investigating businessman Andreas Vgenopoulos, has filed a lawsuit against Cypriot authorities accusing them of perjury and of making false accusations, her lawyers said Friday.

Tsatani has also resorted to the European Court of Human Rights, claiming Greek justice authorities violated the principle of a fair trial, in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights.

Tsatani was ordered last month to appear before a disciplinary panel to explain her handling of the case of Vgenopoulos, the main shareholder in Cyprus’s Laiki Bank before it collapsed.

She was accused of blocking the probe, prompting Cypriot authorities, who are seeking Vgenopoulos’ extradition, to issue a complaint.

Tsatani was taken off the case and a Supreme Court judge ruled, after a three-month probe, that there was evidence backing the claim that Tsatani breached protocol during her investigation.
