Firefighters battle forest fires

Firefighters battled on Friday to douse a forest fire that broke out in the area of Ouranoupoli in Halkidiki, northern Greece.

Two Canadair water-dropping aircraft were dispatched in the early afternoon to assist ground forces battling the flames. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under partial control by late afternoon.

Another large blaze in forestland in Kamariza, near the port of Lavrio in Attica, was stoked by strong winds, hampering firefighting efforts.

Two helicopters and three water-dropping aircraft were dispatched to help the effort on the ground, which involved 50 firefighters manning 20 trucks.
