ND leader says elections only path to ‘political normalcy’

New Democracy chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday stressed the need for political stability and “normalcy” amid a storm that has broken out following a court ruling against a government auction last month of broadcasting licenses.

The conservative leader said elections were the only way to restore some order and accused the government of a “major institutional impropriety” for the way it reacted to Wednesday’s ruling by the Council of State deeming the government’s TV license auction unconstitutional.

The government’s reaction to the decision, Mitsotakis said, “confirms our prediction that [Prime Minister Alexis] Mr Tsipras will respond to all the tragic impasses into which he leads the country with an abundance of authoritarianism and arrogance.”

“I had personally warned Mr Tsipras that his tactics were leading the country onto dangerous ground,” Mitsotakis said. “I told him the country could not tolerate a democratic crisis on top of the financial crisis.”
