A 19-year-old Afghan migrant accused of murdering a 19-year-old medical student in Freiburg, Germany, in October, had been sentenced to 10 years behind bars by a Greek court in 2014. Maria Ladenburger, the daughter of a senior European Union official, was allegedly raped and killed after leaving a student party.

The suspect had been sentenced in Corfu for snatching a female student’s bag and pushing her off an 8-meter cliff. A minor at the time, he was eventually discharged in October 2015, benefiting from a law aimed at decongesting Greek prisons. Although obliged by law to appear twice a month at his local police station, he failed to do so, authorities said.
