Triumph for Olympiakos over leader PAOK

Bjorn Engels was Olympiakos’s hero on Sunday, scoring the sole goal in the big clash with PAOK, to lift the Reds to within one point from the Thessaloniki club that still tops the table. However the winner of Monday’s clash between AEK and Atromitos will rise alone on top of the standings.

The Reds scored their first big win of the season, as their 1-0 triumph over the league leader does not only lift them to 14 points, just below PAOK’s 15, but has also given them a much-needed moral boost ahead of next Saturday’s Derby of the Eternal Rivals at Panathinaikos.

The match at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium was rather poor in action but full of passion, with Engels settling it on the 51st minute when a PAOK clearance ended up into the net off the Belgian defender’s thigh.

Notably, throughout the game there were only three attempts on goal between the two sides, two for Olympiakos and one for PAOK.

Panionios and Levadiakos are also on 14 points, after the Nea Smyrni team defeated Asteras 1-0 at Tripoli and the Livadia club played out a 1-1 draw with PAS Giannina at home.

Panathinaikos came away with a 1-1 draw at Lamia to climb to seventh, as it made just one of its chances count, the 85th minute strike by Guillermo Molins, to offset Lamia’s first-half advantage from a Niklas Hult own goal.

Apollon Smyrnis was the only team to score more than once this weekend, as it beat Xanthi 2-0 in Athens on Sunday. However it remains at the foot of the table since fellow struggling Larissa scored a precious 1-0 win at Platanias Hanion.

Kerkyra rose to ninth at the table with its 1-0 defeat of Panetolikos on Corfu.
