Strong winds prevent ferries from sailing from capital

TAGS: Weather, Travel

Ferryboats were tied up at all three of the capital’s main ports on Thursday as strong winds lashed many parts of the country.

There were no sailings from Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio after the coast guard warned of winds in the Aegean Sea that reached as high as 9 on the Beaufort scale. The Perama-Salamina route remained unaffected, however, and sailings are taking place as scheduled.

In the Aegean, meanwhile, the Artemis ferry had to skip stops at Folegandros, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos after setting sail from Milos and tied up on the island of Syros for safety.

The strong winds are expected to persist through the day, easing over the weekend, and ferry operators advise passengers to check on departures well in advance.
