Celebrating centenary of Callas’ birth with Spontini’s ‘La Vestale’

Argentine tenor Marcelo Alvarez, 61, will sing the role of Licinius in Gaspare Spontini’s opera “La Vestale” in Thessaloniki, as part of the celebrations marking the centenary of Greek-American soprano Maria Callas’ birth.

At the age of 30, he went from being a furniture maker to a tenor, and from being a visitor to the La Scala in Milan, he became a regular performer at the Italian opera house.

“I didn’t know any opera song, not even a passage,” he told Kathimerini. Under the artistic direction of Stefanos Koroneos and conducted by Philippe Forget, the production by Teatro Grattacielo is taking place Saturday and Sunday at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

The first performance took place on Friday evening.
