Conference to focus on growing art business

Political and financial local weekly newspaper Axia is joining forces with internationally renowned Christie’s auctioneers for the «First Athens Art Business Conference 2008.» Essentially, this is the first international conference on the business of art to be held in Greece. It is scheduled to take place at the Athens Hilton on May 27. The upcoming event is happening at a rather appropriate time. On the one hand, the realm of art has recently been attracting a growing number of amateur collectors, while, on the other, auctions that put works by Greek artists under the hammer, both locally and abroad, have been met with increased success. The conference initiative is aimed primarily at investors, bankers, brokers, alternative asset portfolio managers, hedge fund managers, collectors, art merchants and gallery owners – all those already involved in the area of investing in art as well as anyone interested in developing some kind of activity in this particular area. A variety of speakers are expected to make the trip to Athens for the event: internationally known figures from the art world, Christie’s specialists as well as experts from leading firms that manage art and wealth in European countries. Among other issues, the conference will provide information on the mechanisms of private and corporate investing in art markets, while its aim is to establish itself as a recurring event and become a point of reference for investors and collectors alike. Besides providing a forum for discussion, the conference also marks the 10-year anniversary of the weekly Greek newspaper.
