ATHEX: Stocks down in quiet trade

After Tuesday’s crescendo, trading activity appeared quite sluggish on Wednesday at the Greek bourse, with turnover considerably lower and bank stocks yielding ground, weighing on the rest of the market, despite support from PPC and Mytilineos.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 645.10 points, shedding 0.29 percent from Tuesday’s 646.97 points. The large-cap FTSE 25 index contracted 0.46 percent to end at 178.73 points, while small-caps advanced 0.41 percent.

Alpha Bank led the banks index to losses of 0.87 percent with its 1.23 percent decline. It was followed by National (down 1.05 percent), Eurobank (0.51 percent) and Piraeus (0.37 percent). Public Power Corporation climbed 4.76 percent and Mytilineos rose 4 percent, while Hellenic Petroleum dropped 3.96 percent, Aegean Air fell 3.45 percent and Ellaktor gave up 3.29 percent.

In total 41 stocks enjoyed gains, 55 reported losses and 18 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 75.1 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 205.2 million.

In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange expanded 1.65 percent to close at 68.44 points.
