SETE to elect new chief at AGM

This year’s annual general meeting of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) holds special significance both for the industry and politically, taking place at what is a key juncture for tourism in Greece.

President Prokopis Pavlopoulos is set to attend SETE’s open event on Thursday evening at the Athens Concert Hall, where Deputy Prime Minister Yiannis Dragasakis is scheduled to deliver a speech on the government’s tourism policy.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will address the AGM on Thursday morning, when a new confederation chairman will also be elected. After six years at the helm Andreas Andreadis is stepping down, and Yiannis Retsos, current head of the hoteliers association, is expected to be elected to the post.

The 25th SETE AGM will address burning issues such as the effort to get tourism revenues back on a growth trajectory (after last year’s 920-million-euro loss compared to 2015), achieving sustainable growth in arrivals over the coming years when rival destinations escape their current problems, increasing investment and, above all, the overtaxation of the sector.

Tourism professionals warn that if the new tax per night’s stay is introduced it will lead to an immediate hike in hotel rates, compromising Greece’s competitiveness.
