Architects oppose historic school’s transformation

Plans to transform a historic trade school in downtown Athens into yet another hotel have prompted reactions from a group of architects, which has submitted emergency motions to the ministries of Culture and Environment for work to cease and the building to be listed for conservation. Located behind City Hall in Theatrou Square, the Diplareios School of the Hellenic Handcraft Industry Association was built in 1932 and is regarded as a symbol of educational reform and a fine example of abstract classicism. The architects say they are not opposed to the change in the usage, but do take issue with plans to radically alter the interior by splitting its high-ceilinged spaces into small units, disrupting its sense of continuity, balance and purpose.
