Increase in refugee and migrant arrivals in Jan-May

The flow of arrivals of migrants and refugees in the first five months of 2022 increased by 36 pct compared to a year earlier, while at the same time the number of resident asylum seekers shows a significant decrease compared to 2021, according to Migration and Asylum Ministry figures released Tuesday.

Arrivals rose 53 pct on the islands and 26 pct at the northeastern Evros border region.

Flows in May 2022 increased by 96 pct compared to the same month of 2021. In May, there were 8,699 arrivals of Ukrainians, of whom 19 pct are minors. Arrivals of Ukrainians were up 12 pct from a month earlier.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine and until May 31, 32,589 Ukrainians have arrived in Greece, 16,237 electronic applications for temporary protection have been submitted and 14,764 permits have been issued.
