Health authorities note rising Covid death rate

A significant increase in the number of deaths of Covid-19 patients was recorded last week, with a small decrease in the daily infection rates, health authorities said on Tuesday.

According to the latest report by the National Public Health Organization (EODY), an average of 39 coronavirus patient deaths per day were reported last week. This amounted to a total of 271 deaths – an increase of 26% compared to the previous week.

What’s more, a 10% increase was also recorded in the number of patient admissions to hospitals around the country. It was the seventh consecutive week that admissions were significantly higher than the number of discharges due to recovery.

Last week 2,793 patients were admitted, compared to 2,178 patients discharged.

This translates into a relative increase in pressure on hospitals due to Covid-19, at a time when health staff, tired after two and a half years of the pandemic, are being given leave.
