Conservatives wooing young voters

The ruling New Democracy party is looking for ways to attract a large segment of the estimated 420,000 new voters at next year’s election.

This cohort includes people born from 2003 to 2006, as the voting age has dropped to 17. And, judging by the voting patterns among the young, their presence is a cause of concern for the center-right New Democracy, which, at the previous election, in July 2019, won among all age groups except those aged 17-24, which went 38% to 30% for the left-wing SYRIZA.

A €1.8 billion program to subsidize mortgages is aimed squarely at the young, but ruling party officials recognize the pitfalls of a handouts approach and are actively recruiting fresh faces to stand for office.
