Nonagenarian acquitted of unlicensed sale of knitted sock slippers

A Thessaloniki misdemeanors court acquitted on Tuesday a 93-year-old woman of selling knitted sock slippers without a vendor’s license at an open market in 2019.

Sitting in a wheelchair, the woman told the court that she usually hands out the sock slippers for free. “I had 4-5 left and I went to sell them. I didn’t know you needed a permit for that,” she said.

The 93-year-old was arrested at the open market of Ambelokipoi, Thessaloniki, most likely following a report to the police by other market vendors.

The arrest had caused an uproar when it was reported two years ago due to the woman’s age and her daughter’s claim that she had been kept at a local police station for hours, without food or water. She had also been issued with a 2,600-euro fine.
