The incident occurred in the Gazi district, which is about 10 kilometers west of Iraklio.

Polie said the suspect, who is originally from the Mylopotamos area, opened fire after officers gave chase in an attempt to arrest him for other offences.

The police officer was injured in the knee, a 22-year-old civilian in the thigh and a 35-year-old civilian also in the thigh. Iraklio University Hospital later said all three were not in a serious condition.
